Centrale Montemartini

In the Ostiense neighborhood, a former municipal power station from 1912 houses one of Rome's most unexpectedly beautiful museum experiences. The Centrale Montemartini displays over 400 pieces from the Capitoline Museums collection — marble gods, emperors and athletes — set against the backdrop of enormous diesel engines and turbines.

The contrast is startling and deeply effective: a headless Venus reclines beside a massive flywheel; a mosaic of hunting scenes covers the floor below industrial generators. This is a museum that rewards photography and slow contemplation in equal measure. Crowds are minimal compared to the main Capitoline Museums, and the Ostiense neighborhood itself is one of Rome's most interesting emerging creative districts.
