Praia de Benagil

Benagil Cave is Portugal's most famous natural wonder and one of the most photographed sea caves in the world — a cathedral-like limestone cavern on the central Algarve coast, where a collapsed roof has created a circular skylight 20 metres above a hidden beach of golden sand, with shafts of sunlight illuminating the turquoise water below in a way that has been described, accurately, as feeling like standing inside a natural church. The cave was largely unknown outside Portugal until drone photography began circulating around 2015, after which it became one of the defining images of the Algarve and triggered a tourism surge that the tiny fishing village of Benagil has been managing ever since.

The cave's small hidden beach — perhaps 30 metres of sand — is the prize, but reaching it requires getting through the cave's sea entrance, a 5-metre-wide archway accessible at the right tide and swell conditions. The options are: kayak or stand-up paddleboard rented or guided from Benagil beach (most popular, most controllable — allows you to time entry during a lull between waves); swimming (for confident swimmers only — the entrance requires timing the swell and can be physically demanding); or organised boat trip (arrives outside the cave but cannot enter — you see the cave from the sea, which is beautiful but misses the interior experience). The kayak/SUP approach from Benagil beach is strongly recommended: the paddle is 10–15 minutes, the cave entrance is manageable in calm conditions, and the experience of emerging into the cave's interior from the sea is extraordinary.

The surrounding Algarve cliff coast contains several additional sea caves, natural arches, and sea stacks within kayak range of Benagil: the entire stretch from Praia da Marinha to Lagos is riddled with geological curiosities — the Cathedral Cave (Gruta da Adraga), Algar Seco, and the natural rock stacks at Praia da Marinha are all accessible with a half-day guided kayak tour operating from Benagil or from the larger beaches at Carvoeiro.

Getting there: Benagil village is 6km from Lagoa and 7km from Carvoeiro, accessible by road (well-signposted). Limited parking at the beach — arrive before 9am in July–August or use the overflow parking above the cliff. Kayak and SUP rentals available from the beach (€25–35 for 2 hours). Best time to visit: April–June and September–October for calmer seas (critical for safe cave entry) and fewer boats outside the cave; early morning visits in any month have the best light inside the cave.
